The match was played in a slightly different format to last year with each player returning a medal score and the best 8 out of 10 scores on each team going to make up overall aggregate for their team. This format is very similar to that of the England Golf Boys Regional Qualifier (6-Man team).
John Gough was one of the few players to master the tricky par 5’s, producing a best of the day 68, 2 under par. He was, however, slightly disappointed having got to 5 under par after 11 holes. A number of rounds were derailed on the par 5’s and at the very tough 6th hole, which into the prevailing wind caused the players no end of problems.
The overall match result was difficult to assess through the afternoon, as the individual rubbers were all quite close. A birdie here or triple bogey there would change the look in an instant.
The first and second matches finished level on aggregate and that set the tone as the matches came to a close. Wellington established a narrow lead after seven rubbers but BB&O had good leads in the two final matches. Nick Elmey, in the penultimate match, had played beautifully and led for the majority of his match before succumbing to the difficult 6th hole, his last. The overall result was now in the hands of the last match on the course, Alex Nicholls representing BB&O and Alex Wilkinson representing Wellington College. BB&O needed Alex Nicholls to score less than 75 providing that Alex Wilkinson didn’t shoot less than 78. Alex Wilkinson 77 was enough to lower their aggregate by one but Alex Nicholls 73 was enough to lower BB&O’s by four thereby securing a one shot aggregate win, Wellington College 593 vs BB&O 592.
The matches were played in a friendly and competitive spirit, which is a credit to both teams. The result turned out to be very close again with BB&O for the third time in succession running out narrow victors. Wellington will no doubt be looking to reverse their fortunes when the teams meet again at East Berkshire in October.
