The final date for submission of pre qualifying scores from a Club's June Medal has passed. Just 24 of the 39 Clubs who entered, returned their scores. Leading the way of the 12 qualifiers was Mentmore with an excellent 9 under par with defending Champions, Gerrards Cross, next on 8 under. The Finals are at Bird Hills on 17th July

The 6 man team were defending our Title at Wildernesse Club on 3rd July. We were 7 shots off the pace at lunchtime, but were unable to match the Surrey Team''s excellent total in the afternoon. Finishing second to a team with combined handicaps of plus 20 was certainly no disgrace.

The County Team played the Club at Sonning on 3rd July. The County were unable to capitalize on their morning foursomes lead and could not gain the vital point needed from the last two games to tie the match. The Club were worthy winners by 6½-5½

The County side suffered an 8-4 loss to the Club despite fielding a strong side. Local knowledge of the Duchess course for the afternoon singles proved decisive and the County side were unable to claw back the morning deficit.

The County played their second League match at against Essex at Channels GC on Sunday 20th June. Once again, in a thrilling encounter, it was left to Clive Bowler (Oxford City) to birdie the last to tie the match. Ashley Walton (Frilford Heath) played his 5th League game and was presented with his County Colours by the Captain Craig Buttivant.

The Juniors played Bedfordshire at Leighton Buzzard on 19th June. There was some excellent golf from both sides, especially from some of the younger BB&O players. The morning foursomes were shared and unfortunately we were unable to pick up any points from the last 3 singles games, so the match was halved 7½-7½

Tom Lawson (Ellesborough) won the 75th Amateur Championship at Woburn Golf & Country Club on Sunday 13th June. On the extremely long Marquess Course his 150 for the two Sunday rounds saw him take the Title by 3 shots from Gregg Blainey and defending Champion Lee Gauthier, both from East Berkshire.

The Juniors played Hertfordshire at Porters Park on Sunday 6th June. Trailing after the morning foursomes and further back after 4 of the 12 afternoon singles, a spirited rearguard action saw the team earn a well deserved draw.

This event was held at Moor Park on Friday 4th June. 6 Boys from each of the 11 South East Counties play to determine who will go to the final against the other three Regional Groups. We never threatened to win but the Boys put up good performance and eventually finished 6th.

The County Team suffered a heavy defeat at Stratford-on-Avon on Sunday 30th May. Trailing 1-4 after the morning foursomes the players tried in vain to turn the match around, but unfortunately we lost the match 3-12

The Club Scratch & Handicap Foursomes were held at Harewood Downs on Friday 28th May. 87 Clubs entered teams and with 160 players out on the course, it was a credit to them all that they got round as quickly as they did. Andrew Robson and County Champion Lee Gauthier, from East Berkshire, won the Scratch Salver and Colin Bishop and David James, from Woburn, won the Handicap Salver. Most of our trophies seem to be at Woburn these days !!

The County played their first League match against Middlesex on Sunday 23rd May at East Berkshire. A thrilling encounter saw the home side hold off the determined visitors, who were looking for their first win against BB&O since 1995. A great birdie at the last from Clive Bowler
resulted in the narrowest of wins 6½-5½.

David Lane (Goring & Streatley) won the Title at Ellesborough on Thursday 20th May. He won by 3 shots from local player Peter Bent with Anthony Parsons (Denham) taking third spot from Bob Gill (Gerrards Cross) on countback. David, who is President-Elect of the County Union has now won the Championship six times and has won all three that he has played at Ellesborough.

The County team enjoyed their biggest win over the Club for many years. Taking all the foursomes in the morning the team went on to concede just 1½ points in the afternoon for a 10½-1½ win.

Played at Maidenhead GC on 15th May and in glorious weather, Matthew Rendell (Reading) produced two excellent rounds of golf to take the Trophy by an incredible 9 shots. His two rounds of 69 (1 under par) left everyone in his wake but at least the 15 others who qualified for the Amateur Championship also had something to be pleased about.

The County team enjoyed a fine win over a strong club side on 9th May at Stoke Park. Trailing after the morning foursomes by 2 points, the match finished 8-7 in favour of the County Team after they won the last five singles games.

The Seniors played their first League match against Hertfordshire at North Oxford on 12th May. A very close match saw the home team taking the top three singles comfortably, before Hertfordshire returned the compliment taking the next three. A crucial ‘winning’ half in game 7 left the match in our favour as we led in two of the last three games. Steady golf from the Ellesborough players enabled them to close out their opponents and we took the match 5½-4½

The Colts played their first League Match against Hertfordshire on 8th May at Huntercombe. On a miserable morning, in the pouring rain, the home team took the morning foursomes 4-0 with some impressive play. The afternoon singles were agreed as halved when it was uncertain if the course would be playable. A disappointment for all, but nonetheless an 8-4 win.

The County played their second Friendly match against Surrey on 18th April. Both sides had a number of players away, taking part in the Selborne Salver and Hampshire Hog events. This gave some of the youngsters an opportunity to play in a senior match and there were good performances from Ben Harwood (Hazlemere) and Robert Christian (Beaconsfield). A on very wet day the team went down narrowly 6½-8½

Haydn Brooks (Woburn) successfully defended his title with a three shot win over Daniel Taylor with another fellow clubmate, Charlton Day, 3 further shots back in third palce. Robert Hart (Stoke Park) won the Under 16 title and Mark Hall (Oxford City) took the Handicap Trophy.

The Under 14 Team took on Bedfordshire at Hazlemere on Thursday 8th April. An excellent performance in the singles matches saw the home side take the match 6½-3½.

The Juniors continued their winning streak against the Seniors at Beaconsfield on Wednesday 7th April. They took the fourballs 4-1 Congratulations to the 3 members of the Exectutive Committee (including the President) who were not intimidated by the big hitting teenagers and managed two half points. Must be salary review time!!

The County played their first Friendly match against Hampshire at Liphook on 4th April. The morning foursomes were shared and with the last three games in the afternoon taking 2½ points the County earned a narrow win 8-7

The Colts played thier second Friendly match of the year against the Club at Stoke Park on 4th April. A good performance in the foursomes saw the Colts take a big lead at lunchtime and although the singles were much closer the Colts finally won 10-5

The Seniors played a Friendly match against Kent at Sheerness on 1st April. A strong Kent side took advantage of home territory and won the fourball matches comfortably 7-3

A group of 24 are travelling to Portugal for a week of coaching at the Sheraton Pine Cliffs Resort. They leave on 13th March and we are sure that the mix of Juniors, Colts and 1st Team squad members will benefit from the warmer weather and 1st class facilities. County Captain - Craig Buttivant - believes that a really good team spirit will evolve from the trip.

The Annual Dinner has been held at The Blue Mountain Golf Centre on Monday 1st March. Guests included Paul Fisher (President EGU) and His Honour John Slack. Lee Gauthier (East Berkshire) was awarded the Captain''s Tankard, Adam Birdseye (Hazlemere) the Boddington Trophy for the most improved Junior and Tom Lawson (Ellesborough) the Order of Merit Trophy.

The County Team played a Friendly against Dorset at Came Down, overlooking Weymouth Bay, on Sunday 2nd May. The home side took the foursomes 3-2. Having acquired some 'local knowledge' from the morning, the Team were able to turn things around in the afternoon eventually taking the match 8-7

Iain Henderson (The Berkshire) joined a long list of distinguished golfers to win the President's Putter at Rye in early January. Iain is also a Biology Master at Wellington College and amongst his other duties is Secretary of the Golf Club at the College. He is clearly our most successful Golf Club Secretary this year - so far!
