BB&O leads and others follow!
Following the lead set by BB&O in 2008 the English Golf Union has decided to allow the use of Distance Measuring Devices (DMDs) in their events from 1st January 2009. Most other Counties will follow suit and the English Golf Union South East Group will also (probably) confirm their use in their events and matches at the February Committee Meeting.

14s & Under Championship
Alfie Bull (Beaconsfield) holed a great 30 foot putt on the last to edge out James Butterworth (Harewood Downs) to win the Under 14s title at Bicester Country Club on 28th October. Alfie won on count back from James with Alex Wills (Harewood Downs) just 1 shot further back. Reythan Jethani (Wexham Park) took the handicap prize with an excellent net 68.

Hillman Trophy Plate
The Final of the Hillman Trophy Plate between Flackwell Heath AGC and Woburn took place at Buckingham GC on Sunday 12th October. On a wonderful sunny day the final was played in terrific spirit with Woburn taking the Trophy by 5½-1½. Everyone was very grateful for the warm hospitality given to us by the host club and for the fine condition of the course.

Order of Merit
Ashley Walton (Frilford Heath) won the OOM by 9½ points from Tom Wilde (Beaconsfield). Congratulations to the County Champion on his very successful year. Ashley also finished a very creditable 3rd in the Champion of Champions Tournament at Woodhall Spa on 20th September.

Daily Telegraph Leagues
The League matches for the North and South of the Thames have all been played. We finished 3rd in each League. Consistent - but not good enough! Click on the links below for the final positions
Southern Counties Seniors Foursomes
We lost to Surrey in the final after a very disappointing performance at Hayling GC on 29th September. After a good win against Hampshire in the semi final we hoped for better things, but alas, that was not to be.
[Final]

Alan Hobson Trophy
David Lane (Goring & Streatley) and Robert Gill (Gerrards Cross) tied for 3rd place in the EGU South East Seniors Championship at Sutton Green on the 24th & 25th September. BB&O were well represented and would have certainly won the Team prize - if there had been one!
[Result]

Autumn Trophy
Nick Hills (Donnington Grove) won the Autumn Trophy in dramatic style at Goring & Streatley on 19th September. His 8 birdie round of 65 in the afternoon just saw him edge out Nick Jacobs of the home club and John Griggs (Burnham Beeches). Hills' birdie at the last was just what he needed to break the deadlock at the top of the leaderboard.

Seniors v Hertfordshire
The League title depended on the result of this match at Maidenhead on 17th September. A win for either team would secure top place and a close match was ensured. Regrettably we were not able to produce the goods on the day and lost out 6-4. We finished 3rd in the League with 2 wins and 2 losses - both of which were at home.

Colts V Hertfordshire
The Colts ended their League campaign with a fine win against Hertfordshire at Royal Ascot on 14th September. Trailing after the morning foursomes some fine golf in the afternoon turned the match around in our favour as we won 7-5. We finished 3rd in the League with 2 wins and 2 losses.

Junior Manager Vacancy
The BB&O Junior Management team is hoping to recruit a new Junior Manager following the resignation of Mike Styrka, the present U12 Manager, who has been in the role for some five years. We hope to attract a keen supporter of Junior Golf, someone who can spend time organising and supervising matches and coaching sessions. A person who is willing and able to be part of the strategic and tactical decision making forum. Someone, male or female, who can devote up to 10 odd days a year supporting County Juniors. We pay all expenses and will provide County Clothing. However the biggest reward must be seen to be as part of one of the most admired Counties in England. We will also provide training to get you up to speed with the latest Child Protection issues and give assistance in you becoming a recognised Level 1 PGA coach. Please apply by entering the BB&O Junior website Enter Here and clicking on the contact button and sending your message to Jan Hubrecht, or by phoning Jan Hubrecht, BB&O Junior Manager, on 07711 433428.

Seniors v Middlesex
Needing two good wins to stand any chance of challenging for the League title, we did half the job at Fulwell against Middlesex on 1st September. A solid start from the opening 5 games saw us take a commanding lead and despite a few minor worries in the last few games we eventually took the match 6½-3½

BBO v Bedfordshire
In our last match of the season we played Bedfordshire at Caversham Heath on 31st August. It was Duncan Forbes' last match as Captain and the team gave him a fitting farewell as they won with ease. Leading after the morning foursomes 3-1 - two early wins in the singles looked to give us the cushion we needed - before we had a slight wobble! The tail then really wagged and we ended the day winning 8-4.
[Result]

Junior Order of Merit
Jake Canning (Stoke Park) has run away with the Junior Order of Merit Trophy. His 3 outright wins and a tie for first saw him finish 25 points clear of Asa Phillips (Goring & Streatley).

Juniors v Middx v Sussex
The Juniors lost both their matches at Crews Hill on 27th August. Soundly beaten by Sussex we performed slighly better against Middlesex but still lost by 3 points.
U16s v Surrey
We had a good victory over Surrey 9-6 in this annual match kindly sponsored by the MUGS. The boys all enjoyed the day at Huntercombe on 26th August and were given a gift by the MUGS to commemorate the day.

BBO v Middlesex
We were soundly beaten by Middlesex at Sonning on 24th August. There was no way back after losing the foursomes 4-0 and despite a reasonable effort in the afternoon we eventually lost 3-9. Middlesex and Essex are tied on match and game points and if they draw it will be interesting to see how the SE Group decide the winners to face Surrey in the final.

Junior Foursomes
The EGU/SE Group Junior Foursomes was played at The Warren on 20th & 21st August. We had an outstannding 2 days winning all four matches on Wednesday and both matches on the Thursday morning to leave us with an almost impenetrable lead. We secured a very hard fought for victory against Surrey in the afternoon but lost out to Kent, thus preventing us from achieving a clean sweep. Nevertheless a great win and our fisrt success in this Championship since 1999.

 [August Jottings]

U16s v Beds v Middx
At Muswell Hill on 18th August we played our final matches in the Under 16s League. Unfortunately, Bedfordshire did not arrive for the morning foursomes and with 4 walkovers and a very good singles result we won 10½-1½ Against Middlesex we won all 4 foursomes and with the singles shared, took the match 8-4
Colts v Middlesex
At Enfield on 17th August we came up against a strong Middlesex side. We lost the morning foursomes 1-3 and despite a much better performance in the afternoon we could not claw back the deficit and lost the match 5-7

Southern Counties Seniors Foursomes
At Hayling GC on 13th August not only were we up against a strong Hampshire side in the morning, but also the elements with 50mph gusting winds, playing havoc with the Seniors' swings and toupees. There was hair and balls flying everywhere. Absolutely exhausted after their morning efforts the afternoon final between us and Surrey was postponed and will take place at the same venue on 29th September.

[Semi Final]

U14s v Middx v Beds
At North Middlesex on 12th August we fought back to draw with Middlesex 7½-7½ but had a comfortable win against Bedfordshire 10-5
BBO v Essex
We had high hopes of taking this match after an excellent performance in the foursomes. At one stage we looked like we would win all 4 but a disappointing finish, left us just 1 point up at lunch. Again we did not capitalise on a good start in the afternoon and we eventually lost out 4½-7½. We now need a series of results to go in our favour to stand any chance in the league.
[Result]

U14s v Hants v Wilts
At South Wilts on 10th August we enjoyed slender wins over Hampshire 5½-4½ and 6-4 over Wiltshire in this Friendly match.
Colts and Mid Age Championships
Played at Gerrards Cross on 8th August two Championships ran concurrently. Tom Wilde (Beaconsfield) took The Colts title by two shots from Tyrrell Hatton (Harleyford) with David Ford (Reading) winning the Busby Bowl for the handicap prize. In the over 25s Championship Craig Buttivant from the home club edged out Cliff Pearce (Ellesborough) by just one shot.

The entry form for this event can be found by clicking the link below.
U14s v Herts v Beds
In our second League match of the year at Hadden Hill on 4th August we lost out again to Hertfordshire 5½-9½ but recorded a big win over Bedfordshire 13-2
Douglas Johns Trophy
For the 3rd time in 4 years the Championship had to go to a playoff to decide the winner. Defending Champion Harry Whittle (Woburn) had finished with 2 steady rounds of 70 & 71 with Harry Casey (Enfield) adding a 69 to his morning 72. Greg Payne (Chobham) seemed out of the running after a morning 76 but he broke the course record with a magnificent 65 to join the playoff. After 3 holes Harry Cassey took the title with 3 very solid pars with Greg Payne in 2nd place and Harry Whittle in 3rd.

U14s v Herts v Middx
At Aldenham on 29th July we lost to Hertfordshire 6-9 and 5½-9½ to Middlesex in the opening League match of the year.
BB&O v Hertfordshire
With both Captains missing a number of players to the English Amateur it gave both sides a chance to test some new blood at Porters Park on 27th July. On a very hot day we got off to the ideal start winning the first 3 foursomes and only lost the last after the opposition chipped in 3 times. We continued the good form in the afternoon singles and took 6 of the 8 games to win the match 9-3. Our next match is against Essex on 10th August, rearranged after the washout in May.

U16s v Herts v Beds
We beat Middlesex 7-5 but lost to Hertfordshire 5-7 at Mid Herts on 25th July. Somehow Middlesex beat Hertfordshire 6½-5½ no wonder the Junior Managers were confused!
Junior Champion Club
The team from Burford just edged out the Home side to win the Junior Champion Club at Harewood Downs on 24th July. Harewood Downs were first out and their total of 136 looked secure for most of the afternoon. Reading matched this score but lost out on the countback. It was not until the last card came in to give Burford the narrowest of victories and we wish them well in the English Champion Club event in 2 weeks time. Funnily enough this is at Harewood Downs and we hope that the additional practice and competitive environment might help Burford and BB&O take home the Championship.

Champion Club
Stoke Park Club had an emphatic victory at Sand Martins in the Champion Club on 19th July. They now go on to represent BB&O in the English Champion Club at The Wiltshire at the end of August. They were second in 2006 and we hope they can go one better this year.

We came from last place in the morning to playing the best golf in the afternoon as we finally finished 5th overall. John Niven DFC
I am saddened to report the death of another of our Past Presidents - John Niven - on Monday 30th June. John was President in 1991/1992 and was County Captain in 1983 when we last won the English County Finals at Ganton. John was a fine golfer and distinguished pilot during the Second World War. There will be a private family funeral. A memorial service will be held at St Mary's Church Thatcham on 17th July at 12.30pm

Seniors v Essex
Once again we failed to make home advantage count as we lost to Essex at The Berkshire on 7th July. We were doomed after the first 6 games failed to gain a full point and whilst our tail wagged, it was too late, as we went down 4½-5½. We will need to win our last 2 matches convincingly and - you never know - it may come down to my half against Beds which decides the League!

Seniors v Bedfordshire
The Seniors opened their campaign with a win against Bedfordshire at John O'Gaunt on 30th June. Despite the absence of 3 key players we were able to call in other experienced individuals from the grey gene pool to still put out a strong team. I can't speak for the others but at least I was under par in my match against one of the top players in the world (in my opinion anyway) ! How come I get dropped for the next match to make way for David Lane - answers on a postcard please.

Colts v Bedfordshire
After a great start to the season we came down to earth with a bang as we lost 5-7 to Bedfordshire at The Millbrook on 28th June. We lost the foursomes 1-3 after looking for most of the morning as if we would be level at least. This proved too big a deficit to pull back and with the honours shared in the afternoon we lost the match. We are still in with a shout for the title as each County has lost at least 1 match.

We had hoped for better things, at Royal Wimbledon this year, after 3 successive runners-up finishes to Kent. However, we failed to stick to our game plan and eventually finished a distant 4th to Kent who beat Hampshire on a countback with Hertfordshire in 3rd spot.

Amateur Championship
In the most closely contested Championship for many a year, five players came to the last 2 holes in with a chance of taking the Title. With his experience as a past Champion only Ashley Walton (Frilford Heath) was able to hold his nerve to finish with 2 pars to take the Title from local member Tom Wilde by 1 shot and 2 from Darren Walton (Woburn) and Adam Glass (Caversham Heath).

Colts v Essex
At long last a win against the mighty Essex Colts team. Although we know they were unable to field their strongest side we still needed to pull out all the stops to register our first win against them at Harleyford on 1st June. We were even at lunchtime but managed to turn round a number of games, in which we were down, in the afternoon singles to win 8-4. This was our first win against Essex since 2002, coincidently at Harleyford.
[Result]

Junior County Qualifying
We managed a far better result than recently at Rookery Park, in Suffolk, on 30th May. We did not stick to our game plan in the morning round and paid the penalty by being 16 shots behind the leaders and in 5th place at lunchtime. Despite a best of the day team score in the afternoon, we had left ourselves too much to do and finished 3rd behind Surrey and Suffolk.

U16s v Herts v Beds
In the first of our League Matches we had mixed fortunes at Richings Park on 28th May. A fine win against Bedfordshire 10½-1½ was offset by a heavy defeat 2½-9½ to Hertfordshire.
Juniors v Hertfordshire
In the 3rd of our Friendly Junior matches we played Hertfordshire at Buckinghamshire GC on 27th May. We shared the foursomes, courtesy of a walkover in game 1, but had the upper hand in the singles and took those 7-3 to win the match 9½-5½
[Result]

Juniors v Bedfordshire
The Juniors enjoyed a good win in this 18 hole match against Bedfordshire on 24th May. Played at The Bedfordshire GC we had a number of very good results and took the match 8½-1½

Penfold Trophy
At Calcot Park on 17th May 63 players vied for the 23 qualifying spots for the Amateur Championship. A bunched up field in the morning after some excellent scores saw Joe Winfield (Woburn) leading after a 2 under 68. Local player Darren Gatward stormed home in the afternoon with a fine 67 to edge out Winfield and win the Penfold Trophy by just 1 shot. Those on 155 or below qualified for the Amateur Championship at Castle Royle.

BB&O v Dorset
A better result for us in our second warm up match of the season. At Ashley Wood on 27th April we shared the foursomes in the morning and took the singles 5-3 to win the match.

Juniors v Surrey
A new fixture has been arranged now that BB&O & Surrey have decided to withdraw from the SE Group Colts League from 2009. This first match saw our Under 16s take on the might of Surrey's Under 18 team and whilst we lost, there were some pleasing aspects to the result.

Robt. (Bob) Stewart
Once again I have to report some very sad news. Bob Stewart, a stalwart of BB&O, died after a short illness on Friday 7th March. Bob was Secretary/Treasurer of BB&O for 13 years until 1999. He then took on the Presidency in 2000 and worked extremely hard to develop Junior Golf within the Union for the next 3 years. He will be sadly missed and I for one will miss him as he was a great mentor, friend and Boss.

Jim Walkinshaw
I am saddened to report that our President Mr Jim Walkinshaw, a member of Denham Golf Club, passed away on Saturday 19th January after a short illness. Everyone in the County Union is shocked to lose such a friend and colleague and we will miss his enthusiasm for the game of Golf.

County Card Scheme
We have sent our renewal notices to existing cardholders for 2008. We are pleased to announce that we have expanded the scheme to include some of our Midland & South West Groups Counties. The number of participating clubs has expanded to over 600 and the County Card offers terrific value for money at just £15. This year the card will run for 13 months so that all the Counties start the year on 1st April. All the money we raise from the scheme goes straight back into the development of our Game at grass roots level - your support is greatly appreciated. An application form is available on the link below and you will find a list of participating clubs in the County Card menu above. Please remember that YOUR Club must be in the scheme for you to be able to purchase the County Card.
