Hillman Trophy Plate
The Final of the Hillman Trophy Plate was played at Sonning on 31st October. West Berkshire prevailed 4-3 after getting off to a great start by winning the first 3 games. Despite a good fightback from the Buckinghamshire tail it was too little too late and the West Berkshire Captain, Charles Dixon, had the honour of winning his game to take the Trophy for the first time.

14s & Under Championship
On a delightful day at Maidenhead on 26th October, 30 Boys battled it out to decide the last Championship of the season. A number of the players struggled to play to their potential as nerves got to the better of them. Many were playing in an event of this type for the first time. However, Will Cooper (Woburn) continued his impressive form this season and despite a stuttering start, played the last 16 holes in 2 under par to finish with an excellent 71 and take the title, by 5 shots from Jake Dines (Hinksey Heights), with Alistair Cameron (Beaconsfield) another shot back. Adam Dewji (Woburn) looked a certainty to win the Handicap prize after a great net 64 only to be thwarted at the last moment by Max Nicholls (Newbury & Crookham) who eased his way round in 78 off 16 handicap. Not for much longer! Well done to all the Boys, who as ever, were a credit to their respective Clubs.

Southern Counties Seniors Foursomes
We came up against a strong Hertfordshire side in the morning semi final at Orchardleigh on 20th October. Good performances from the top pairings were outweighed by the strength of the Herts last 3 pairs. We lost each game comfortably and had to be satisfied with beating Suffolk in the afternoon to secure 3rd spot. Herts went on to take the title by beating Gloucestershire in the final.
Daily Telegraph Seniors Final
In an exciting match at Dunstable Downs on 15th October, we just managed to beat Hampshire to the title. The score of 7-3 did not indicate the closeness of the games and we scored 3 birdie 2s at the last to win three of the games. Rod Crisp had the biggest win of the day and had the honour of getting the winning point. Adrian Donkersley beat 'Red Five' who was making his first appearance in the Hampshire Seniors. I promised to leave all the motor racing puns out - they were the pits anyway!

Hillman Trophy Plate
The Semi Final round has been completed and West Berkshire will play Buckinghamshire on 31st October. The venue will be Sonning GC at 11.00 on 31st October. Last updated 16th October.
Hillman Trophy
The Final of the Hillman Trophy was played at Frilford Heath on 10th October. Studley Wood and Calcot Park battled it out around the Green Course on a glorious Autumn day. Studley Wood gained a solid advantage after 3 games and the Calcot Park team struggled to hold on. The vital point for Studley Wood came on the 17th green in game 5 and they secured their first win in the Championship. A wonderful final played in the best of spirit and congratulations to all the players for their performance over the season.

A pretty good performance from our players with three finishing in the top six. Robert Gill (Gerrards Cross) was the best placed in 2nd but 7 shots back from the runaway winner from Essex - Geoff King.

Autumn Trophy
On a glorious day at Henley on 18th September, 62 players battled it out for the last Order of Merit Event of the year. Excellent scoring in the morning saw 25 players shoot 75 or better, but home advantage would enable James Brockington to produce a best of the day 67 in the afternoon to win by 3 from former Colts Manager, Jon Carter (Reading), who added a 68 to his morning 74. Defending Champion Nick Hills (Donnington Grove) was 3rd and Asa Phillips (Goring & Streatley) 4th after countback on 142

Daily Telegraph Leagues
The Seniors finished top of their League and the 1st Team second. We will meet Hampshire in the Seniors Final at Dunstable Downs on 15th October. Click on the links below for the final positions.
Seniors v Middlesex
The Seniors played their final League match at Ellesborough on 7th September. Needing just 2½ points to secure the title we made heavy going of it to start with. Our top order struggled a bit but some cunning team management got us through as the last 6 games went undefeated. A 6-4 win gave us a 100% record for the season and we wait to see who we will meet at Dunstable Downs on 15th October for the Daily Telegraph Salver.

Our Under 14s Team finished 2nd to Hertfordshire and our Under 16s 3rd behind Middlesex and Hertfordshire. For full results see the 'Results Sheets' archive and click on the link below for final League Tables.
U16s v Surrey
The Boys had a tough match against Surrey at West Hill on 1st September. Well behind after the morning foursomes and it was always going to be a struggle to pull back the deficit. We did play much better but could only manage to share the spoils and finished up losing 6-9. The series, sponsored by the MUGS, now stands at 8 matches apiece.

Junior Order of Merit
Joe Richardson (Frilford Heath) won the Beaconsfield Junior Open on 26th August and with it won the Junior Order of Merit. Jordan Mann (Sand Martins) was his nearest challenger but he finished outside the points at Beaconsfied and finished 2nd in the JOOM. Luke Williams (Hadden Hill) our Junior Champion finished in 3rd place and is shortly on his way to Woodhall Spa to compete for the EGU County Junior Champions of Champions tournament over The Bracken Course.

South East Junior Foursomes
We set out to defend our Junior Foursomes at Thetford on 26th & 27th August but could only just manage to avoid relegation, finishing 7th on countback. We played poorly on both days and were remarkably lucky to avoid the drop as James Brockington holed a wedge shot on the 18th for the most unlikely of birdies and the vitual point we needed. BB&O V Hertfordshire
We met Hertfordshire at Stoke Park on 23rd August in the decider for the North of the Thames League. Undefeated, so far this year, we just needed a draw to take the title. We got off to a good start with a 3-1 lead at lunchtime. The afternoon was a different affair as we were completley out-classed in the singles. We never looked like getting the 3 points needed for victory and Hertfordshire cruised home winning the match 4½-7½. We wish them well in the Final at Hankley Common in October.

Southern Counties Seniors Foursomes
Our turn to host this event this year and we went to Goring & Streatley on 21st August to test the stamina of some of the finest Senior athletes in the South East. After a tense semi final against Surrey we prevailed (after the most peculiar tie break system ever devised) and went on to play Hampshire in the Final. Our outstanding fitness enabled us to keep ahead in all our games and we came home 4-1 winners. We now go on to Orchardleigh, in Somerset, for the final of this event. Good job it's 2 months away - giving our athletes time to recover!

Seniors v Bedfordshire
The Seniors finally broke their duck at The Berkshire against Bedfordshire on 17th August. Home advantage has not helped one bit over the past three ocassions we have played the Blue Course, but we managed it this time. A solid start from the top 4 games gave us a healthly lead and despite a couple of wobbles mid way down our 'tail wagged' for a 6½-3½ margin.

Autumn Trophy
The closing date for the Autumn Trophy at Henley on 18th September is fast approaching. Please ensure you get your entries in as soon as possible for a great value day out at lovely venue. I'll take entries up to 9.4 if this helps.

Champion Club
After abandoning the fixture at Oxford City due to horrendous weather conditions - we had a great summer afternoon at Denham GC on 16th August. The Championship Committee had decided to make this event 2 best scores from 2 rather than the normal 2 from 3. Despite this giving the bookies a potential surprise result - it was not to be - as Stoke Park eased along the rails to canter home 5 shots clear of Flackwell Heath. Now we hope that one of our strongest Club sides can win the EGU title at North Hants in mid September. Good luck to Kevin Freeman, Steve Barwick and the rest of the team. Report to follow soon.........

Under 14s Championship
The entry form for this event can be found on the link below. As we did not have enough entries for the Under 12s Championship this has now been cancelled. However, we will award this prize at the Under 14s Championship. Next year we will scheduled the event at the very beginning of the School summer holidays to attract more entrants.

Amateur Championship
Sandy Bolton (Goring & Streatley) capped a fantastic week by winning the BB&O Amateur Championship at Burnham Beeches over 7th & 8th August. Sandy enjoyed a successful debut in the Boys Internationals representing Scotland and being undefeated in his singles games. Despite already playing 36 holes a day for the past week, he reeled off three consectutive 69s before producing a stunning front nine in the fourth round to take the lead in the Championship. James Brockington (Henley) and Ashley Walton (Frilford Heath) could not quite match this blitz of birdies and Sandy came home to win by 2 shots. Ashley finished 2nd and wrapped up the Order of Merit and James finished 3rd and will surely feature again in the near future.

BB&O v Bedfordshire
The County had a good win at South Beds GC on 2nd August. Bedfordshire were fielding a young and inexperienced side as they look to build for the future. Both in the morning foursomes and singles they put up a good display in the early stages but could not match the finishing power of the BB&O team. Even our lone 'non winner' finished with three birdies to get his ½ point. Mind you that did not stop his team mates having a go at him. We must now concentrate on the final match of the season against Hertfordshire at Stoke Park on 23rd August. Their halved match against Essex today will ensure a thrilling end to the season. We must draw or win the match to take the League title.

Douglas Johns Trophy
Toby Tree (Worthing) produced a best of the day 68 in the afternoon at Harewood Downs on 30th July to win the Douglas Johns Trophy. The event for Under 15s attracted an excellent field from around the Country, Europe and also one player from the Middle East. England Selectors were on hand to watch some very good golf from the boys in difficult conditions as Toby took the title by 2 shots from Robert Burlison (Oxley Park) and Max Orrin (North Foreland).

Carris Trophy
Max Smith (Newbury Racecourse) scored a best of the day 68 at Moor Park in the final round to finish 11th. Tyrrell Hatton, James Brockington and Luke Williams also made it through to the final day, but is was Smith who finished the best just 6 shots behind the winner. Max won the Malcolm Reid (not our Captain) Salver for the best combined score in the Carris & Peter McEvoy Trophy - which he won in April.

Champion Club & Courage Trophy
What a terrible day at Oxford City on 17th July! The storms were so severe we had no option other than to abandon play. Although the course was in immaculate condition and drained in record time - the threat of lightning was such that we could not guarantee the players safety. After an aborted restart play was cancelled. The event will now be contested over 18 holes at Denham on Sunday 16th August at 2pm. Teams of 2 with both scores counting. A notice has been sent to all participating Clubs.

Seniors v Essex
The Seniors continued their impressive away form with a comprehensive win against Essex on 13th July. Playing over the comparatively new Blakes Golf Club was not an advantage to the Essex team as many had never played it before. Good selections by the Seniors Manger ensured we got off to a good start and continued this through all the games before winning the match 8½-1½.

County Qualifying
The County finished 4th in the South East Qualifying at the delightful Aldeburgh GC in Suffolk on 11th July. With a Par of 68 and a SSS of 73 you know it was going to be tough. Our plan to finish ahead of Surrey was accomplished (just) but we weren't to know that Essex were to produce some of the best golf of the past 10 years of the tournament. They won the Title by 9 shots from Sussex with a score of 31 under the Standard Scratch - an average of just over minus 2.5 per player. Pretty good!

Penfold Trophy
Sixty players battled it out at Temple GC on 28th June for the 24 qualifying spots for the Amateur Championship in early August. All the players found the going tough in the morning but the scoring improved dramatically in the afternoon. Mark Tomlins just edged home to take the Trophy from Charlie Cooper (Gerrards Cross) and Sam Whitehead (Woburn) after all three had rounds of 71 in the afternoon.

Meanwhile Dononvan Henderson-Sowerby (Burford) and Will Cooper (Woburn) were battling it out over a 4 hole playoff to determine the Colts Championship. They had tied on 141 after Cooper shot 67 in the afternoon. At the 4th extra hole the Burford man finally got his hands on the Trophy. Will Cooper won the Busby Bowl for the Colts' Handicap event.

Changing the event to a 36 hole qualifying did not help us overcome Kent at East Sussex National on 15th & 16th June. For the 4th time in 5 years we finished second albeit a long way off the pace. We wish them well in their challenge for the EGU title later in the year.

BB&O v Essex
After torrential rain at Gerrards Cross on 7th June our match against Essex eventually got underway 1½ hours late. We got off to a great start in the morning taking a 3-1 lead in the foursomes. We looked to have things firmly under control early on in the singles but a spirited fightback by the Essex players saw the match go to the wire before we edged home 6½-5½ just as the heavens opened - once again. Our thanks to the host Club and Members for their enormous efforts to ensure the County match was given priority throughout the day. Click on the lick below for the result.

Hadden Hill had a runaway victory in the Junior Champion Club event at Winter Hill on 26th May. The draw has been completed and sent to Club Managers and Team Organisers. This year 92 clubs entered meaning that 56 clubs have to play a Preliminary round before Tuesday 14th April. The 1st round needs to be completed by 11th May. Over the past 10 years each club has played in the Preliminary and 1st Rounds on an equal number of ocassions. Richings Park, the winners in 2008, have a difficult opening match against Oxford City who they beat in the final at Ellesborough. Even I didn't believe it when the draw was done!!!
