The Berks Bucks and Oxon Union of Golf Clubs was formed at a meeting at Maidenhead Golf Club on 17th March 1924. The Union is a non profit making organisation that devotes its resources to the administration and development of amateur golf in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. At present the Union comprises of 113 Golf Clubs (including Artisans).
The BB&O Golf Union is financed principally through subscriptions paid by every male playing member of an affiliated golf club. The Union is also proud to have its sponsors and partners.
Both England Golf and BB&O have as their main objectives the promotion of the amateur game and the maintenance of the traditions and rules of the game of golf as defined by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. We aim to host prestigious Championships, ensure that the County is represented by highly competitive County Teams, develop golf within the County, and aid affiliated Golf Clubs with as wide a range of services as possible.
The BB&O is managed by an Executive Committee with the day-to-day affairs being carried out by the Secretary’s Office. Each of our service lines is headed by a member of the Executive Committee who is elected from various affiliated golf clubs within the County.
County Membership Card:
The County Card represents tremendous value for money. It provides the opportunity to play more than 1,300 clubs who offer special rates throughout the country. The County Card is continually being updated and the BB&O is leading the way on this and is responsible for the administration on behalf of all participating counties. You may have wondered how the Standard Scratch Score of your course is determined. The Union, through its Course Rating Team of Experts, surveys each course using a prescribed national system. Whilst still largely based on the total length of the course the system takes into account the difficulty factors presented by trees, rough, bunkers, water hazards and contours of the greens etc. The resulting figure is the Standard Scratch Score. On a difficult course the SSS may be higher than Par and similarly on an easier course it might be less. The SSS is designed to level out handicaps across all courses.
Although computer systems now handle the day-to-day alterations of handicaps, disputes and advice are handled by the County Office. We liaise with England Golf on your behalf as well as help clubs with rules and course set up queries that have an impact on qualifying competitions. We are responsible, along with other County Unions, for ensuring that handicaps are handled with consistency throughout the country.
The Union supports the First Team, The Seniors, The Junior Elite (Under 18’s), Under 16’s and Under 14s County Teams. We arrange home venues, coaching, management, equipment and entries. Our First Team, Seniors, Junior Elite and Under 16s compete in the South Eastern Region Leagues as well as National Qualifying events and Finals. As a result of our Golf Development investment our County Teams go from strength to strength and are a force to be reckoned with.
Championships and Tournaments:
The Union organises championships and tournaments for men, boys, seniors and clubs. Without exception they are administered to the highest standards and are some of the best venues within the County. The BB&O Amateur Championship qualifies for World Amateur ranking points. To enter or to veiw a full list of our championships please click here
The Golf Development Group was formally known as the Golf Partnership and comprises of input from the Ladies Associations, The BB&O Union of Golf Clubs, and England Golf. We have invested heavily in recent years and have coached hundreds of juniors. England Golf currently employs a County Development Officer who is responsible for helping club managers and professionals make use of grants and programmes available to them. The BB&O commits funds every year and makes money available to develop golf via coaching for all age groups and abilities, club management via Golfmark and playing activity via programmes such as Golf Express and GetIntoGolf.
The Executive Committee also believe strongly in developing golf from the ground up and are responsible for developing our very successful Futures Tour. This Tour of 12 tournaments for golfers of age 15 and below offers young golfers the perfect opportunity to develop and since the tour’s inception, along with our County coaching programme, has produced England Internationals who have won on County, Regional and National levels.
To summarise: Teams, Championships, Rules, Handicaps, Standard Scratch Scores, Development and Talent Identification are functions of the BB&O Union of Golf Clubs. Funded by each and every male playing member of an affiliated club, the Union ensures that the superstars of tomorrow are constantly being given the environment in which to succeed. Every member of an affiliated club directly contributes to the continuing success of English golf and beyond. Golfers who have come through our system have gone on to play on Tour, been part of Ryder Cup Teams and one even made it to World Number One!
