The weather was dry though extremely cold. The constant wind ensuring that the temperature didn’t get much above 3 or 4 C. The course was in good condition. The greens had been hollow tined and sanded during a recent maintenance week. The greens were still sandy and as a result were not as fast as usual.
A solid enough start to our title defence. Three out or four of the foursomes pairings worked well together, communicating, assisting and cajoling throughout their matches.
Our performance in the singles matches, against Bedfordshire, was slightly disappointing. We narrowly won the singles by a margin of 4½-3½ though we should have won more convincingly. At one stage we were ahead in 7 of the 8 matches against Bedfordshire. The three matches where the results turned around cost us 2½ points. We had a much more convincing win against Middlesex taking the match 11-1.
I was very happy with the overall attitude of the boys. A good team spirit was demonstrated throughout the day with a sensible level of banter and micky taking that didn’t affect the ability to perform.
