The Junior Elite Squad played our season-opener against Wellington College on March 9th on a cold but dry day. The course was in good condition considering the heavy rain and was, as always, a good test for the boys. All the scores are shown as 1up as we can't show medal results.
We fielded a 10-man team for singles only - but instead of playing traditional match play, we had 10 medal matches which helped both team managers assess the relative abilities of new squads. We are fortunate to have strength in depth all the way through the Squad this year and so five players were rested for this match. On this occasion we were too strong for Wellington with 10 a-side and enjoyed a 6½ - 3½ victory. However, with the bottom four BB&O players winning, the match was close amongst the top six.
Leading by example, captain, Chris Little put in a superb performance at number one, coming from behind with six birdies on the back nine to shoot 67 and win by one shot. George Gardner and Elliot Wills also played well to beat their opponents with good scores although Elliot's round was more adventurous than George's! Michael East and Alex Nicholls weren't firing all cylinders for this match and Sam Brass narrowly lost at number 2. Patrick Bart kept it tight all the way through eighteen holes and took the win from his talented opponent, whilst Alex Buckner halved and Jack Landauer won also. Congratulations also go to Christian Jones, who following a lesson with County Coach Rob Watts, won his debut match for BB&O.
Thanks to all the parents and supporters from BB&O and also to Wellington College for their excellent hospitality.
