MUGS match V Surrey

The MUGS fixture is an important fixture in the U16 squads diary. The fixture is always contested between BB&O & Surrey. Unfortunately Surrey were a player short for the morning foursomes and thus graciously conceded us a point in the 3rd match. That said the BBO players played well and were 3.5 to 1.5 up at lunch. Solid performances from Struan Hancock (Capt.) and Will Tate in the top game and Huw Peason and Charlie Robb in the second. This put the team in a great position heading into the afternoon singles.

Surrey rallied in the afternoon singles and the tide turned decidedly in their favour. A desperately unlucky Will Tate lost to Surrey’s young star Harry Crocket in game number one. Crocket produced a miraculous up and down on 17 and held a 55 foot put on 18 to win 1-up. Struan Hancock won game number 2 and enjoyed 100% points for the day. With losses for Huw Pearson and James MacFarlane things started to look difficult for BBO. Fine wins for Charlie Roper and Ben Loveard added some afternoon points on board.

The two Harrys, Thomas and Gale battled hard but were both defeated and left us needing Josh Roche to deliver a win from a negative position. Sadly Josh was 2-down with two to play and thus the best result possible was a half. His birdie on 17 reduced his dilema by a hole and a fine drive at 18 clearly put pressure on his Surrey opponent. Advantage for BBO was brief and the Surrey player hit the green from 200 yards out. Josh was unfazed and struck his second shot to 15 feet and following his opponent’s failed putt for birdie, calmly rolled his own into the middle of the cup for an incredible half point.

BBO 7.5 Surrey 7.5 - a halved match. Only the second in the 25 year history of this match.

The match was played in great spirit and with spoils shared the trophy was presented jointly to both team captains. Each team player received a momento and a sleeve of balls from the MUGs captain.Next year’s fixture, hosted by Surrey returns to West Hill GC.
