Berks Bucks & Oxon Golf
As temperatures soared, 66 players were battling it out for the Amateur Championship at East Berkshire Golf Club. Finlay Szafnauer (Frilford Heath) set a target of 69 (level). With the top 16 and ties making it through to the final round, the leaderboard was looking tight. Taylor Paul (Stoke Park) had an eagle on 11 which helped him shoot the first sub-par round with a 67 (-2). Peter Handcock (Harleyford) managed to go one better, making birdie on the last to shoot an impressive 66 (-3).
21 players made it through to the final round with Peter holding a 1 shot lead.
The Penfold Trophy is presented to the best nett after the first round. Taylor Paul's nett 69 was leading in the clubhouse until Peter Handcock shot 33 on the back nine to beat Taylor on count back.
Kevin Freeman (Stoke Park) took advantage of the better conditions and shot 67 to set a target for the rest of the field. Even though it was cooler than Friday the golf was heating up in the final two groups. Olly Huggins (Frilford Heath) was peppering the flag and rolling in the putts to shoot a very impressive 64 (-5) to take the clubhouse lead on -5. Tom Lawson (Stoke Park) finished strong with 2 birdies to take second place on -2 on count back to Peter Handcock (Harleyford), who shot a final round +1.
Congratulations to Olly on winning the Amateur Championship for the second time - a fantastic final round to secure the win!
